Mary Jean was the daughter of the late Cecil Henry and Lula Elizabeth Dagenhart Waugh. Through the years, she built a life marked by steady devotion and a quiet strength—someone deeply cherished by those who knew her and valued for the way she showed love through constancy, effort, and care.
A hard-working presence throughout her life, Mary Jean spent time as a knitter in the textile industry, bringing patience and diligence to her work. That same work ethic carried into the everyday rhythms of her home life, where she found purpose in staying busy and taking care of what mattered to her.
She shared 20 years of marriage with her late husband, Emory Robert Summers. In the life they built together and in the family that surrounded her, Mary Jean’s love was felt in practical, faithful ways—through showing up, through doing, and through the steady attention she gave to the people and places she held dear.
Mary Jean loved to work and especially loved being outdoors. She was a gardener who enjoyed raising flowers and was famously protective of her flower garden. She also loved working around her home, finding satisfaction in the simple, honest tasks that made a house feel cared for and lived in.
A member of Marvin Methodist Church, Mary Jean’s life was also shaped by the comfort of faith and community, and by the familiar place of worship that helped anchor her days.
Mary Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Emory Robert Summers; her father, Cecil Henry Waugh; and her mother, Lula Elizabeth Dagenhart Waugh.
She is survived by her son, Allen Summers (Pamela) of Stony Point, North Carolina; her brother, Robert Waugh of Stony Point, North Carolina; her grandchildren, Stavcey Sweeney, Brian Sweeney, Deanna Perez, Michael Rash, and Elizabeth Rash; and her great-grandchild, Maria Perez.
