Maurice Nicholas Comerford Jr.

Maurice retired from DuPont, where he worked as a Paint Chemical Engineer. His work also carried him beyond home—traveling to Egypt as a chemist to teach others his trade—an outward-looking spirit that matched the curiosity and willingness to go wherever he was needed.

In 1984, Maurice married Patsy “Pat” Anita Gentry Causby Comerford, and they shared 30 years of marriage until her death on August 19, 2014. He was a proud father of eight children, and he cherished the closeness and bustle of a big family. Among nieces and nephews, he was affectionately known as “Uncle Moe,” a name that fit the easy familiarity he inspired and the way he made room for everyone around him.

Maurice found joy in polka festivals, dancing, traveling, and cooking, and he especially loved Christmas parties—gatherings where laughter, food, and family could fill a room all at once. He was also well known for crafting good deals, bringing a spirited confidence and a sense of fun to the everyday art of making things work.

He was preceded in death by his father, Maurice Nicholas Comerford, Sr.; his mother, Evelyn Vera Brewster Comerford; his wife, Patsy Anita Gentry Causby Comeford; his son, Stephen Comerford; his daughter, Teresa Bates; his brothers, Gene Comerford and Daniel Comerford; and his sister-in-law, Betty Comerford.

He is survived by his son, David “Maurice” Comerford of Buchanan Dam, Texas; son, John Comerford of Flint, Michigan; daughters, Jeanette McMurray (Ted) of Sarasota, Florida; Joyce Hitsman of Swartz Creek, Michigan; Laura Angell (Russ) of Swartz Creek, Michigan; Cathy Newell of Davison, Michigan; his brother, Duane Comerford (JoAnn) of Shields, Michigan; his special friend, Carolyn Tester; and his good friend, Gabe. Eighteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren also survive him.

The family will receive friends at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home, located at 705 Davie Avenue, in Statesville, on August 5, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. A graveside service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, beginning at 2:30 pm with Pastor Bill Troutman officiating. He will be laid to rest next to his wife "Pat".
