Mildred Smith Whitley

Mrs. Mildred Smith Whitley, 88, of Statesville, died Monday evening, June 20, 2011 at Davis Regional Medical Center. Born in Cabarrus County on May 26, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Clyde B. Smith and Etta Little Smith. She was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Whitley and a son, Michael Whitley.

Survivors include two sons, James L. Whitley and his wife, Denise of Charlotte and Richard E. Whitley of Mt. Airy, a daughter, Mrs. Jonna Sears and her husband, Dick of Statesville, a brother, Everette Smith of Albemarle and sisters, Laura Hartsell and Owonna Clayton both of Albemarle, Carolyn Kimrey of Laurenburg and Sharon Caudle of Litchfield, SC. Also surviving are six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Services celebrating Mrs. Whitley's life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Oakdale Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Barefoot and Rev. Luther (Drag) Kimrey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall.
