

She was born February 12, 1917, in Alexander County and was the daughter of the late William Carl and Junie Williams Payne. She was a faithful and devoted homemaker and for many years worked in retail with Efrid’s, Spainhour’s, and Belk’s Department Stores. She was a long-time, faithful and active member of First ARP Church in Statesville where she had been a member of the Walker Bible Class, Circle One and the Joy Club. She was also a member of the Challenger Club at Loray Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed reading, yard work, flowers, sewing, and creating beautiful art with her needlework and crocheting.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 1964 by her husband, Glenn Brady Hedrick, whom she married in 1935; a granddaughter, Sandra Hedrick Faw; four sisters, Virginia Deal, Jean Setzer, Marie Campbell, and Betty Carpenter; and three brothers, Burette, Courtland, and Kenneth Payne.
She is survived by her daughter, Glenda Hedrick (John) Williams of Winston-Salem; two sons, Robert “Bob” (Nina) Hedrick of Kingsport, TN and Gene (Doris) Hedrick of Statesville; seven grandchildren, Jerry Hedrick, Danny (Cynthia) Hedrick, Carol Whiting, Leslie Williams (Jack Goldsmith), Camille Williams, David Hedrick, Jr., and Douglas (Carrie) Hedrick; ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services celebrating Nell’s life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, December 29, 2012, in the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Southern officiating. Private burial will be at Iredell Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service.
