She was born February 19, 1930, in Rowan County and was the daughter of the late Thomas Mikle and Bessie Harris Moose. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church where she enjoyed taking senior trips. Nellie always wore an infectious smile and was known for her big heart. To her grandchildren, they found comfort in her loving arms as she expressed her endless love for them. She was very passionate about her grandchildren and served as an inspiration to them as well as the other children whom she watched in her home. Nellie and Boyd symbolized what a family should be through their illustration of love for one another. After her husband’s death, her great-grandchildren served as a great inspiration to her and gave her a renewed will to live. While her health limited her from enjoying nature, she loved flowers and watching the hummingbirds around her home.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death on July 9, 1994, by her husband, Boyd Garfield Campbell, whom she married on December 22, 1948; and a sister, Eloise Whitaker.
Nellie is survived by two sons, Jerry Campbell (Phyllis) and Boyd Campbell (Becky), all of Statesville; five grandchildren, Lisa Campbell-Maynard, Cherie Campbell-Williams (Andy), Matthew Campbell (Leanne), Cindy Campbell, and Rebecca Campbell, all of Statesville; four great-grandchildren, Gracie Maynard, Grayson Maynard, Jaedann Allison, and Jaylyn Campbell, all of Statesville; two sisters Johnsie Weatherman (Paul) of Mocksville, and Vivian Walker (Rex) of Harmony; a life-long friend, Sarah Tayes; and loving friend and caregiver, Sherry McClelland.
