Pauline "Polly" Douglas Johnson

She was born March 8, 1919, in Iredell County, NC, and was the daughter of the late Dewey and Jettie White Douglas. She was a member of Union Grove United Methodist Church where she had been active with the United Methodist Women and with the music department as a pianist and organist. She was an elementary school teacher for 33 years in the New Hanover County and Iredell County Schools. She was a charter member of the Union Grove Ruritan Club Ladies Auxiliary.

On December 27, 1940, she married Joseph Alec Johnson, Sr., who preceded her in death on March 15, 1992. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Delia Mattocks and Ruth Jacokes; and a brother, Robert “Bobby” Douglas.

She is survived by two daughters, Julia Ann Hayes (Ted) of N. Wilkesboro and June Herring (Marvin) of Union Grove; a son, Joseph Alec Johnson, Jr. (Sandy) of Lewisville; seven grandchildren, Todd Hayes (Pam), Chris Hayes (Tanya), Jodi Gray (Charles), Jennifer Johnson, Jacquelyn Grant (Jeremy), Hayley Watson (Kyle) and Robin Herring; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, J.W. “Bill” Douglas (Nan) of Statesville; and a sister-in-law, Fern Johnson of Greensboro.

Funeral services celebrating Polly’s life will be held at 4:00 PM Sunday, August 5, 2012, at Union Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Kirby officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall on Sunday immediately following the service.
