February 7, 1934 – September 27, 2026
Peggy Ruth (Wood) Trimble, 92, of Statesville, North Carolina, passed away on September 27, 2026. A mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, Peggy will be remembered for her devout faith, her beautiful soprano voice, and her lifelong love of music.
Born in Statesville on February 7, 1934, to Richard Wood and Fern (Gray) Wood, Peggy attended Morningside School before life as a military spouse took her across the country and overseas. She especially treasured her time living in Tripoli, Libya, and the experiences she gained while living abroad.
A daughter of North Carolina, Peggy lived through more than nine decades of profound change. As an African American woman raised in the segregated South, she carried a personal understanding of history that she shared with younger generations. Through her stories and lessons, she helped her family understand their roots and appreciate the lives and experiences of those who came before them.
Peggy later returned home to Statesville, where she worked as an administrative assistant in the superintendent’s office of Iredell-Statesville Schools until her retirement. She was the mother of five children.
Peggy took great pride in her family’s tradition of military service, including the service of her father, her daughter, her grandson, and her great-granddaughter.
Faith and music were central to Peggy’s life. Over the years, she worshiped at First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and Calvary Presbyterian Church in Statesville, as well as Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte. She shared her gift of song through many choirs, lending her soprano voice to the worship and fellowship of her congregations. She also taught Sunday school for many years, sharing the faith that guided her throughout her life.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Fern Wood; her son, Douglas “Doug” Mozer; her daughter, Nancy Goins; her grandson, Garneill Mozer; and her granddaughter, Erica Long-Price.
She is survived by her daughters, Patty Cone and Lisa Mozer; her son, Steven Mozer; her grandsons, Donyeill Mozer (Likuana), Ricky Long (Yashica), and Dexter Samuels (Felicia); her granddaughter, Maria Gilmore; and her many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her beloved first cousins, Kordella Jolivet and Vera Knox, with whom she shared a particularly close bond, along with extended family and friends who will cherish her memory.
Through the hymns she sang, the lessons she taught, and the history she passed down, Peggy leaves her family a legacy that reaches across generations.
A service celebrating Peggy’s life will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Bunch Johnson Funeral Home in Statesville. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
