

He was born on October 28, 1924, in Iredell County, and was a son of the late Jay Love York and Ruby Myrtle Morrow York.
Mr. York attended Celeste Henkel High School and left when WWII began, to work in the Norfolk Ship Yards. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard in the Fall of 1943 and was sent to England to be a part of the landing party on D-day. After that his ship was sent to participate in the invasion of France. His ship was later sent to the Pacific and saw action at Iwo Jima and at Okinawa. He received an honorable discharge in February, 1946.
He returned to Statesville and became a cabinet maker, which he worked at the rest of his adult life.
Mr. York was a long time member of Front St. Baptist Church. He was very active in his Men's SS class and the Men's Prayer Breakfast Group.
Mr. York was married to Kathryn Leona Poole York on March 16, 1946, and she predeceased him on July 15, 2010; a son, Robert Brent York, of Statesville who died on July 23, 2010; two daughters, Kathryn York Davis and husband Tap, of Spartanburg, S. C., and Barbara York Cornelius and husband Jim of St. Louis, Missouri; three grandchildren, Bradley Talbert (Jennifer), Emily York Smith, and Kristi York Turner (Andrew) and six great-grandchildren, Kamryn Smith, Malachi Smith, Lilee Travis, Cooper Turner, Anderson Phillips Talbert, and Bradley McClure Talbert; and two sisters, Mr. Evelyn York Benfield (Ray) of Winston-Salem, NC and Mrs. Farry York Morrow Ernest of Winston-Salem, NC.
In addition to his parents, Mr. York was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry and Lawrence York.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 21, 2015 at Front Street Baptist Church.
Services celebrating Mr. York's life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Front Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Stutts, Rev. Darren Johnson, and Rev. Rick Cruz.
Burial will follow in Iredell Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be members of the Loyal Soldiers Sunday School Class.
