Mr. Roy Brewer, 78, of Hickory, NC passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2014 after an illness of several months. Roy was born in Statesville, NC on March 10, 1936, to the late Orlando Roy Brewer and Mary Ellen Bailey Brewer. After serving in the United States Marine Corps, Roy completed a 37-year career at General Electric Company, Hickory. After retiring from General Electric, he worked for 10 years with the Hickory Crawdad Baseball Club. A member of the Hickory Running Club for over 20 years and an avid runner, Roy enjoyed countless hours of running with close friends. He enjoyed being active in the outdoors and spent much of his retirement hiking through the mountains of North Carolina and the parks of Northern Virginia. Roy combined his two favorite things, children and sports, through his lifelong involvement in Little League Baseball. His regular attendance at youth baseball games will be missed. Always walking with a spring in his step and a smile on his face, Roy Brewer was a generous friend to anyone he met along life’s trails. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen Bustle Brewer in 1980. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Hilda Brewer Smith, and her two sons, Jerry and Larry Smith, and brother-in-law, Foy Lee Templeton. He is survived by his children: Cynthia Brewer Ledford and husband Bill of Salisbury, NC, and Tim Brewer and wife, Lisa of Springfield, VA, 3 grandchildren: Heidi Ledford and husband, Yoh Isogai of Cambridge, MA, and Abbey and Ryan Brewer of Springfield, VA, and 2 great-grandchildren: Hana and Kai Isogai of Cambridge, MA. He is also survived by unofficially adopted son, Michael Wise of Hickory, NC. Other survivors include his sisters and brother, Margaret (Harry) Beard, Jean Templeton, Bill (Sandy) Brewer, all of Statesville, NC, and Rosemary (Ed) Ramsey of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by devoted members of the Bustle family; and a number of nieces and nephews and other extended family members. Visitation will begin at 1:00 on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Western Avenue Baptist Church with funeral services following at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to West Springfield Little League, P.O. Box 2563, Springfield, VA 22152, noting contribution in memory of Roy Brewer. Online condolences may be made at Bunch Johnson Funeral Home in Statesville is serving the family.

Tim and Lisa and the entire family, I was so sorry to hear of Roy's passing. I remember many a Sunday morning run and walk with Roy. He always had stories to tell and made the time fly by. He was a very special man and friend and he will be greatly missed. He always looked forward to spending time with his family and always bragged on his grandchildren.
