He was born April 10, 1922, in Iredell County and was a son of the late Bruce Austin and Lena Mae Day Waugh. He was a member and Elder at Oakland Presbyterian Church. He was a retired Lieutanant from the Statesville Police Department and later retired from the U. S. Postal Service. He served in the U. S. Army Air Corp during World War II in the China, Burma, and the India Theater. Until his death, he was the oldest surviving retired member of the Statesville Police Department.
On June 28, 1942, he married the former Virginia Little who died on December 6, 2007. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Will Waugh and a sister, Dorothy Jordan.
Survivors include a son, Tony Waugh and his wife, Donna; two daughters, Shelia Stroud and her husband, Larry, and Tina Goode and her husband, John; two sisters, Mary Reavis and Lucille Morrison, all of Statesville; grandchildren, Alicia Cook (Kelvin), Gina Kasinger (Kevin), Chris Stroud (Alisha), Chappel W. Miller (Grant), Austin Waugh (Brenae), Jefferson Waugh and fiance' (Katie Warren), Grayson, Samuel and Jacob Goode; and great-grandchildren, Leah, Ryan and Ethan Cook, Bryson Stroud, Grayson Sparks, Weston Miller, Raleigh Cate Waugh and Carrington Waugh.
Funeral services celebrating Tom's life will be conducted at 1:00 PM Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at Oakland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Steve Snipes officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Burial will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens with full military rites presented by the Iredell County Veterans Council Burial Detail.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home.
