

She was born June 25, 1920, in Catawba County and was the daughter of the late Rufus Monroe and Nancy Alice Withers Drum. She worked as a clerk at Harmon’s Grocery for many years and catered weddings for 15 years. She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and a former member of Women of the Moose, the ABWA, and the VFW Rebekah’s Group.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Daniel Bottoms, Jr., whom she married on July 5, 1945; four brothers, Boyd, Brather, Harold and Bryan Drum; and two sisters, Mae Holder and Lorene Morris.
Velma is survived by a daughter, Patricia Ann Bottoms Williamson (Douglas) of Dallas, TX; a son, Danny Bottoms (Teresa) of Anderson, SC; six grandchildren, Meridith Fix (Eric), Cynthia Putnam (Jody), Gina Sharpe, Kimberly Bottoms, Christina Bottoms (John), and Stephanie Bottoms; five great-grandchildren, Cole, Emma, Sydney, Caitlyn and Mackenzie.
Funeral services celebrating Velma’s life will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Monday at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home.
