

Virginia Taylor White Moxley passed away Sunday, October 31st at her home at the age of 93. She fought a courageous battle against lung cancer for a year and a half. She was born in Furches, N.C., now a part of Laurel Springs in Alleghany County, to the late Velen Long Taylor and Joseph Kenley Taylor but lived most of her life in Statesville, first, for 40 years in the Wayside community, and then for 30 years on Starmount Drive.
Upon graduation in 1934 from Glade Valley High School, Glade Valley, N.C., she attended Appalachian Normal School (now Appalachian State University). At Appalachian she met her first husband Woodrow W. White, while she was a freshman and he a senior. After one year she transferred to a business school in Newton, N.C. and worked at a savings and loan until her marriage in 1940.
Mrs. Moxley was preceded in death by husbands Woodrow W. White and Lt. Col. John D. Moxley, USAF, both of Statesville as well as eight brothers and sisters: Walter R. Taylor, Guy F. Taylor, MD, Martha T. Douglas, Charles Brantley Aycock Taylor, Don Long Taylor, Mary T. Britt, Everett L. Taylor and F. Ulmont Taylor. She is survived by her son Jeffrey W. White and wife, Mary M. White of Statesville, daughter, Nancy W. Thompson and husband Thomas T. Thompson, MD of Raleigh, step son, Hon. Dean Moxley of Titusville, Florida, grand daughters, Alison L. White of Statesville and Sarah V. Thompson of New York City, step grandchildren Carol M. Thompson of Raleigh and Mark C. Thompson of Los Angeles and a sisteer-in-law, Grace P. Taylor of Statesville along with several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Moxley is also survived by a very special friend, Carolyn Wooten, her Sloan's Cleaners family, Penny Parker, Colleen Chapman, Betty Mitchell. Lori Mitchell, Margaret Mayberry, Tamara Upright, Essie Stinson, Shelia Weaver and Cornelia Steele.
She was lovingly attended in her final months by her caregivers, Marge Miller, Judy Nolan, Tammy Kerley and Lynn Bell. Gratefull thanks also goes to Susie Ireland for her support and concern through trhe last years.
In 1964, upon the death of her husband "Woody", Mrs. Moxley became the owner/operator of Sloan's Cleaners, now in its 101st year. She remained active in the business until shortly before her death. She was a member of the Statesville Altrusa Club for many years.
Services celebrating Mrs. Moxley's life will be conducted at 11:00 Tuesday November 2nd at the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with Dr. Jack Causey officiating. Active pallbearers will be: Bill Wooten, Henry Stockton, John Marshall, Chase Hatchett, Larry King and Paul Hatchett. Willie Phillips will serve as an Honorary Pallbearer. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Dylan Thomas, in his poem of the same name, wrote: "Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light." And she most certainly did!
