

Wilburn Eugene Tutterrow, age 81, formerly of North Myrtle Beach died suddenly at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center of a heart attack Monday 27 Dec 2010. He was born in Union Grove, N.C. to Burchard Pierce and Alice Van Hoy Tutterrow on February 6th 1929 the youngest and last surviving of 13 children. Gene graduated as valedictorian from Union Grove High School Class of 1947 and then joined the Air Force where he served in the supply corps and was sent for a yearlong overseas tour in Iceland. He then married and is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years Ramie Lawrence Tutterrow his high school classmate. He was honorably discharged from active service, remaining a number of years in the reserves rising to the rank of Captain. Shortly thereafter Gene began a lifelong career as a Federal Government Civil Servant where he served in a number of administrative positions of increasing responsibilities that took his family and him to Mobile AL, Charlotte NC, and Memphis TN, before moving to Northern VA. He retired after over 30 years of government service in 1988 from the Department of Education while living in Springfield VA. Gene remained very active in retirement, he was a part-time realtor, served on the Prince William County community service board, on various Republican Committees, he volunteered for Meals on Wheels, church deacon, and was an active member of First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach. Along with Ramie he is survived by his son Dale Tutterrow and daughter-in-law Julie of Shepherdstown WV, his daughter Karen Tutterrow McCarthy and Son-in-law Ed of Pittsford, NY. He was a proud grandfather of eight grandchildren, Carl and Ramie Tutterrow, Charlie, Ryan, Casey, Joshua, and Rachel McCarthy. He was predeceased by his grandson Brannon Tutterrow McCarthy. Gene’s memorial service will be at 2:00 pm Thursday 29 December at the Union Grove Christian Church with Rev. Alan Lunsford officiating. The visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service. Gene will be interred at the church cemetery in Union Grove NC.
