OBITUARY
Doris L. Smith
December 10, 1927 – August 21, 2015
Doris Lee Wheeler Smith, 87, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Redman “Jake” Smith, her parents, Lawrence Newton and Lola May Staubus Wheeler, a brother, Donald S. Wheeler, and Jake’s son, Jimmy Wine Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Theresa Lee Smith, as well as a number of treasured nieces and nephews, Janice Faye Wheeler and husband Eddie, Donna Lynn Wheeler Troubaugh and husband Ronnie, Patricia Ann Wheeler, Lisa Marie Wheeler Losh and husband Larry, David Newton Wheeler and wife Linda, Andrew Clark Wheeler. She also leaves special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Turner. She held in highest regard her dear friend and companion, Daniel W. Knopp. She was a member of Hebron Presbyterian Church, The Augusta Garden Club, the D.A.R., and The Tuesday Club of Augusta County. Her days of volunteering at Hebron Presbyterian brought her great joy. She served on numerous community boards as a generous and thoughtful member. She gave her time and lovely spirit to everyone she encountered. She had a beautiful and purposeful life. Doris was dedicated to her husband’s career and those who were members of the Smith’s Transfer family. A graveside service will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at Thornrose Cemetery with the Rev. Olivia Haney officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 PM Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at the Staunton Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 18 West Frederick Street. Memorial contributions may be made to Hebron Presbyterian Church, 423 Hebron Road, Staunton, Virginia 24401, The R. R. Smith Center for Arts, 20 New Street, Staunton, Virginia, or The Museum of American Frontier Culture, P.O. Box 629, Staunton, Virginia 24401. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Staunton Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
