Elizabeth "Betty" Page Hutchens Barr

Elizabeth Page “Betty” Barr, 88, formerly of Staunton passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Augusta Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born October 14, 1923 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, daughter of the late George Brooks and Nellie Belle Harris Hutchens. On April 24, 1943, she married Hugh C. Barr who preceded her in death on May 30, 2006. She was also preceded in death by step-father, Eugene F. Stover, one sister, Mary Hutchens Johnson, four brothers, Isaac Randolph Hutchens, George H. “Pat” Hutchens, John F. Hutchens, and Leo E. “Bill” Hutchens. Mrs. Barr was secretary in the Alumni office of Mary Baldwin College for 24 years retiring in December 1987. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and the Sallie Fuller Circle and the Francis Asbury Class. She enjoyed Quilting, needlework , oil painting and geneolgy. She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Balsley and husband Leonard of Stuarts Draft and Barbara Sheets of Cardinal, VA.; five grandchildren, Roger Harlow of Norfolk, Teresa Losh and husband Mike of Stuarts Draft, Tammie Toner and husband James of Stuarts Draft; Bonnie Harlow of Newport News and Cathy Shumate of Hampton; 4 great-grandchildren, Laura Doyle and husband Adam of Staunton, Annamarie Losh of Stuarts Draft, Tiffany Toner of Stuarts Draft, and Cassandra Harlow of Hampton; 1 great-great-granddaughter Ella Doyle; 2 sister-in-laws, Ann Hutchens of Waynesboro and Jean Barr of Jacksonville, FL. A service will be conducted at 2:00p.m. Friday, May 4, 2012 in the Staunton Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes with Rev. Doug Paysour officiating. Burial will follow at Thornrose Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Gordon Sours, Rusty Sours, Bob Wright, David Rosser, Skippy Lunsford and Adam Doyle. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes of Staunton and other times at the home of her daughter Joyce Balsley, 230 Stuart Avenue, Stuarts Draft, VA.
