

Dr Nicolas Radoiu, 89, of Staunton, Virginia passed away on 13 July 2011 at the Emeritus at Staunton Assisted Living Facility. Dr Radoiu was born on 01 May 1922 in the small Carpathian mountain village of Talmacel, Romania. His family later settled in the village of Bazosul-Nou where his father (a disabled World War I veteran) farmed and raised sheep. During the World War II German occupation, he was imprisoned by the German Army until liberated by Soviet forces in 1944. He attended the University of Cluj medical school until the Communist takeover of Romania in 1948 at which time he escaped into neighboring Yugoslavia seeking political asylum. Once across the border, he was imprisoned in various Communist forced labor camps in Bosnia. He was able to escape to Austria in 1949 on his third try after which he immigrated to France to resume his medical studies at the University of Paris (Sorbonne). In 1951, he immigrated to Canada and received his Medical Doctorate at the Laval University (Quebec) in 1953. After internship and residency, he immigrated to Detroit, Michigan where he practiced with the Henry Ford Medical Group as a rheumatologist and taught immunology at the Wayne State University’s Medical School until his retirement in 1995. He was an avid reader and wrote on his spare time.
He is survived by his wife, Denyse Morin Radoiu; son, Michael and his wife, Sharon, of Staunton; daughter, Christine Young-Radoiu and husband, Robert Young, of Florence, Italy; three grandchildren, Anthony, Mick and Gabrielle.
A private Mass and family ceremony will be conducted at a later date in his original home parish of St Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.
