Ralph John Griffin, passed away on September 26, 2026, at the age of 80. Born March 17, 1946, John lived a rich, full, and wonderfully interesting life, spending more than fifty years making his home near Churchville, Virginia.
John never met a stranger. In fact, he seemed to believe that every person he encountered was simply a friend he hadn't had the opportunity to talk to yet. Whether you knew him for five minutes or fifty years, John had a story to tell, a question to ask, or a conversation to start. He had a gift for making people feel welcome—and there was a good chance that a "quick hello" with John would turn into a considerably longer conversation.
John had a deep and abiding love of nature. He found joy in the outdoors and in the beauty of the world around him, appreciating the wildlife, the changing seasons, and all the wonders of nature. An avid fisherman, John found a special kind of peace and happiness with a fishing rod in his hand and the water nearby.
Above all, John loved his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Clayton; his much-loved children, Samuel Brison Griffin (Candyce); Catherine Faith Lathrop (Erik); granddaughter Kyleigh Ann Griffin; sister Mary Lee Mathison; sister-in-law, Debbie Obenschain; and his cherished cat, Lucy, who undoubtedly considered herself an equal—and possibly superior—member of the household.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever part of the stories his family and friends carry with them.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
