Carolyn Annette Graves

With immeasurable gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we celebrate the life of Carolyn Annette Graves, who entered eternal rest on July 3, 2026, at Inova Hospital in Leesburg, Virginia, at the age of 78.

Born in Fountain Hill, Arkansas, to Jack Graves and Marie (Miller) Daniel, Carolyn’s life was shaped by faith, family, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in the goodness of people. She grew up in Fountain Hill and graduated from Fountain Hill High School in 1966, as part of its first integrated class. That was an experience that helped shape her courage, resilience, and deep appreciation for community. A talented athlete, she loved playing girls’ basketball and carried that competitive spirit, determination, and love of teamwork throughout her life.

Carolyn continued her education at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, where she completed three years of study before beginning a career devoted to serving others and moving to what would become her adopted hometown of Benton Harbor, Michigan.

Throughout her professional life, Carolyn led with integrity, compassion, and excellence. She served as Assistant Director of Dial-A-Ride, Inc., held the position of Human Resource Manager at Dawson Manufacturing, Inc., and later served as Church Manager at Union Memorial AME Church. Regardless of her title, she believed that every position was an opportunity to improve someone else’s day.

Her commitment to service extended far beyond her career. Carolyn proudly served two terms on the Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education, advocating for students, families, and the future of her community. She also served as a board member of the grief counseling center Lory’s Place, was an active leader within the African Methodist Episcopal Church, participated in the Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber of Commerce, and remained engaged with the Dulles South Senior Center after moving to Virginia.

Above every accomplishment, however, Carolyn treasured her family.

She was a devoted mother who celebrated watching her children grow into independent adults, pursue higher education, and build loving families of their own. Her grandchildren and bonus grandchildren were among her life’s greatest joys, and she delighted in every opportunity to encourage, celebrate, and simply spend time with them.

Carolyn’s faith was the foundation of her life. A faithful member of Union Memorial AME Church for over 40 years, she loved God deeply and lived her faith every day. Prayer was her constant companion, and she found strength in the words of 2 Corinthians 5:7: “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” She didn’t simply quote Scripture—she lived it.

To know Carolyn was to know someone who never met a stranger.

She believed every person deserved to be acknowledged. A simple greeting could become a lifelong friendship. A conversation could become a community. She had an extraordinary gift for making people feel seen, heard, and valued. Whether through a heartfelt phone call, a thoughtful birthday or holiday card, or simply answering every text and every call, Carolyn showed people that they mattered.

She was known for her quick wit, infectious laughter, unwavering honesty, and remarkable sense of humor. She travelled extensively within the United States, with her favorite cities being San Francisco, California and New Orleans, Louisiana. She loved word-search puzzles, watching Family Feud, spending hours talking with friends, staying connected on Facebook, enjoying soul food, listening to gospel music, and watching her favorite movie, Coming to America. She was famous for her sweet potato pies and equally well known for one of her favorite sayings: “I don’t have time for stupid people!”

Wherever Carolyn lived became home because home was never simply a place—it was wherever love was shared.

In her later years, Carolyn made her home in Virginia with her daughter and family, where she continued to touch lives despite significant health challenges. Even while faithfully attending dialysis treatments, she did what she had always done best: she built friendships, encouraged others, and created community among people who had once been strangers. Her kindness, resilience, and unwavering spirit never diminished.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her beloved son, Rev. Jared Graves, Sr.; her parents, Jack Graves and Marie Daniel; and her sister, Vertis (Graves) Starnes.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughter, Gia L. Graves; her daughters-in-love, Joyce Graves, Dr. Kamilah Banks-Word, and Indya Watts-Graves; her treasured grandchildren, Jared Graves, Jr., Javen Graves, Bellamy Watts-Graves, and Nicholas Watts-Graves; her beloved bonus grandchildren, Nolyn Banks-Patrick and Noriyah Banks-Patrick; her cherished nephews, Douglas Thomas and Dexter Thomas; her lifelong friends, Mamie Yarbrough and Victoria White; and a host of extended family members, church family, dear friends, neighbors, and countless others whose lives were forever enriched by knowing her.

A Celebration of Carolyn’s Life will be held in Virginia on Saturday, August 1, 2026, with a viewing beginning at 11:00 a.m. and the service at 12:00 noon at Demaine Life Celebration Center in Sterling, Virginia. Light refreshments will be served following the service.

A second Celebration of Life will be held in Michigan on Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Union Memorial AME Church, 911 S. Crystal Avenue, Benton Harbor, Michigan, followed by a repast.

Carolyn’s greatest legacy was not found in the positions she held, but in the people she loved. She taught us that kindness is never wasted, that faith can carry us through every season, and that sometimes the simplest gesture—a smile, a phone call, or a heartfelt “good morning”—can change someone’s life.

The family invites all who knew Carolyn to honor her memory by extending the same kindness she so freely shared. Greet someone. Encourage someone. Make someone feel seen. In doing so, her beautiful legacy of love will continue to live on.
