On Saturday, January 9, 2021 Alberta Genevieve (Olson) Dahlgren, fondly called Birdie by all, died peacefully with her family at her side at the age of 96. Birdie was in Pennsylvania celebrating Christmas with her two sons' families. Birdie is preceded in death by her husband, Carl Edward, on June 13, 1990. She is survived by her five children – Becky Dahlgren Bostrom (Lisle, IL), Donna (Craig) Braaten (Waterford, WI), Ellen Hogbin (Moline, IL), Carl Dahlgren (Harleysville, PA) and John (Caroline) Dahlgren (Chester Springs, PA); 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Birdie was born on October 6, 1924 and grew up in Riverside, IL. She married the love of her life on June 7, 1947 at First Lutheran Church, Berwyn, IL. After 50 years of living in Berwyn, she spent her time with each of her children wherever they were and her summers at the family's home on Lake Holcombe, WI. Here she enjoyed beautiful sunsets, pontoon rides, happy 'sherry/port' hours and supervising other activities. She never liked goodbyes and always told family and friends to “come back soon”. Birdie loved to travel; she’s been overseas to Mexico, France, England, Portugal, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Canada, Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. She was an avid reader and was always up for family game night, winning most of the time. She loved to sing, people watch and do needlework. She had an angelic voice and smile. Her recipes will be treasured always, especially her coffeecake and glögg. Her final “earthly” flight was in the cargo hold of an A/A plane.

Graveside funeral will be held 1:00 PM on Friday, January 22, 2021 at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Stickney, IL. Pastor Julie Boleyn from Unity Lutheran will preside.

In consideration of the safety of our guests and associates, Mount Auburn Funeral Home will adhere to the current gathering restrictions in the state of Illinois, which allow 10 or fewer guests at services at a time. Proper social distancing must be practiced and all guests will be required to wear face masks.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory to one of her many places of worship – Unity Lutheran in Berwyn, IL; St. James Lutheran in Bettendorf, IA; Advent Lutheran in Harleysville, PA; Mt. Pleasant Lutheran in Racine, WI; to American Heart Association or your favorite charity.

May God bless the eternal life and legacy of Alberta Dahlgren. She will be deeply missed by all.

Memorial Poem by David Harkins

She is Gone

You can shed tears that she is gone

Or you can smile because she has lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back .

Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see her

Or you can be full of the love that you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday

Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she is gone

Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back.

Or you can do what she would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

Dear Dahlgren Family - in times like these the heart feels so much. But words are hard to come by and express what we feel. I have never met or shared part of my life with such a loving caring wonderful woman as Birdie. I have to thank you for allowing me the privilege of having her in my life, it made my life richer for that. I will never forget the twinkle and sparkle in her eyes, especially when she was with her family and the ones she loved. She was a very rich woman and not by material things but with the love of her family and friends, everyone loved her. I will miss her but I know in my heart at 3:00pm in heaven she is having her cocktail hour with your Dad, and smiling down on all of us.

Dear Becky, Donna, Ellen, Carl and John,
We were deeply saddened to hear the news about your mother. Please, accept our deepest condolences on her passing. She was a very special lady that led an incredible life demonstrated through her faith and love for her family and friends. Due, to the restriction to the number of graveside attendees, we felt it more appropriate that immediate family be able to fill those spots. Please, know that we are keeping your family in our prayers. Love, Eric, Liz, Carl, Linda, Gary and Becky
