OBITUARY

Anthony James Stevens

June 7, 1943September 4, 2020

Anthony James Stevens (Shevchuk) (77), originally of Cicero, Illinois, went home to be with the Lord on September 4, 2020, after a long battle with Parkinsons. Tony was a devoted father, grandfather, and brother who spent his final days surrounded by his loving family and friends. Tony loved the art of conversation and made friends everywhere he went. He enjoyed traveling, especially road trips to South West Michigan. He loved to share stories from his careers as a fireman and building inspector for the Village of Oak Brook. There was nothing more important in his life than family.

Tony’s greatest joy was his two grandchildren, Jack and Natalie, who affectionately called him P-Tonz. He is survived by his son Joe (Nicole) and his daughter Sara. He was the oldest of five siblings Margie Walsh (Clarence), Rita Brinker (Al), Michael Shevchuk (Maureen), and Phil Shevchuk (Jane). He had many nieces and nephews that he adored.

He is preceded in death by his father Anthony Sr, mother Margaret, and brother Phil.

Out of concern for all those who loved Tony, visitation will be private. In lieu of an in-person visitation, memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.MountAuburnFuneralHome.com for the Stevens family. Mass information to follow. The family will have a celebration of Tony’s life in June of 2021. Our sympathy & love go out to all of Tony's family. Paul & I always enjoyed spending time with Tony in person or talking on the phone. We'd get together and talk about our families, grand kids & life. Tony loved his family and absolutely loved being a grandpa! We always said that Tony was a "class act". He was kind, thoughtful and generous. We went out to dinner or would just hang out together and talk. We both will miss our dear friend very much. We were blessed to have had Tony in our lives!

I joined the Oak Brook Fire Department in 1993 and Tony was one of the most senior guys back then. He eventually called me son and I called him dad. He was truly a great man and mentor. He had so many great stories and he will be truly missed! Until we meet again!

I joined the Oak Brook Fire Department in 1974. There were seven of us on shift back then. Tony was stationed at firehouse one. “my favorite station. “ If you needed to make a copy of anything you had to go to the Village Hall to do it. Good old days. As a New guy I could always turn to Tony for advice. He was a hard and honest worker and always in the know. We were on a garage fire once and he screamed out the he had embers burning his back. It turned out to be stings from a nest of bees. Another time I was struggling as to where to put a skylight in my van. He grabbed the saw, cut the hole and put it in in minutes. It never leaked. Good man and friend. He will always be a Shevchuk to me. God Speed Buddy.
