Carol Jean Cheney

March 22, 1935February 28, 2019

Carol Jean Cheney, 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 28, 2019, with family by her side.

Carol was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, to Margaret and Frederick Schultz on March 22, 1935. She married Neil James Barzano in 1954, and they were blessed with four children: Jamie, Lorie, Neil (“Chipper”), and Scott. The family relocated to Hickory Hills, Illinois, in 1970. Neil passed away in 1977.

Following Neil’s death, Carol met George Cheney. The two fell in love and were married on July 30, 1987. They enjoyed watching Jeopardy, doing crossword puzzles, bowling in a league, and spending time with their families. They lived together happily in Burbank, Illinois, until Carol’s passing.

Carol loved her job at Carl Sandberg High School in Orland Park, Illinois, where she worked as an AV Secretary. With a Diet Coke in her hand, she was known to provide not only AV support, but more importantly an ear, treats, and love to those in need. After twenty years of dedicated service, Carol retired. She always remained grateful to her students and coworkers who had touched her heart along the way.

Carol had a passion for people, both young and old. She could have a conversation about anything with anyone. It was not uncommon for Carol to meet a stranger and learn their life story within minutes of saying hello. Carol was known for her quick wit, wealth of knowledge, and compassionate spirit.

Carol is survived by her husband, George; their seven children – Jamie (Tom) Strong (WI), Lorie (Moye Mitchell) Barzano (TX), Scott Barzano (NV), Deborah (Jim) Sheehan, Rebecca (Tom) Kayes (IN), Patricia (Blue) Morris, and Kenneth (Karry Rogers) Cheney (IN); their thirteen grandchildren – Daneille (Adam) Skibness (WI), Michelle (Jason) Rieger (WI), Erin Mitchell (TX), Vanessa (Tim) Murphy, Megan (Russ) Litko, Kelley (Steven) Francis, Kyle Sheehan, Ashley (Rob) Gard, Tommy Kayes, Kim Kayes, Ryan Morris, Jessica Thompson, and Brandi Foiles; their thirteen great-grandchildren – Cecilia, Isabelle, and Zoe Skibness (WI), Jaxon and Sophie Rieger (WI), Margaret and Molly Murphy, Claire Litko, Rory and Declan Francis, Ainslee and Rhett Gard, and Alexis Morris; her sister-in-law, Clara Schultz (FL); very special niece, Robbin (Jeff) Luckett; and nephews, Robie, Tom, and Jon Schultz (FL). Carol was also a loving great-aunt to Suzan (Jason) Kretch, Maxim, Mercedez and Marcus Luckett, and Andrew, Samantha, Natasha and Cynthia Schultz (FL); and great-great aunt to Talon and Andi Kretch.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Frederick, her brother, Robert Schultz, husband, Neil, son, Chipper, and great-grandchildren, Madison Skibness and Josef Rieger.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at Mount Auburn Funeral Home, 4101 Oak Park Avenue, Stickney, Illinois, for family starting at 1 p.m. and the public from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. A chapel prayer will be held on Monday, March 11, 2019, at 11 a.m. with burial following.

The family would like to thank all those who have cared for Carol over the years. She had an infectious laugh, an opinion on everything, and a heart that loved beyond measure. This year as we all decorate our Christmas trees with her homemade ornaments, we will smile knowing Carol has found peace.
