It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, great-uncle, and friend, Charles Joseph Opalecky, who passed away on June 28, 2026, at the age of 99. He was born on July 31, 1926, and lived a long, healthy, and independent life marked by strength, service, and devotion to those he loved.
Charles was a proud U.S. Army World War II veteran, having bravely served during the Battle of the Bulge, a chapter of his life he carried with quiet pride and humility. His service reflected the courage and resilience that defined him throughout his long life.
Above all, he was a devoted father to his two children, Tom (Ingrid) Votava and Coleen Bailey (Greg Werne), who were the pride and joy of his life. He was a loving and proud grandfather to John Slobodnik, and Jeffrey and Joseph Werne, each of whom brought him great happiness.
He was a strong and independent man who lived life on his own terms. He enjoyed many friendships throughout his years and found joy in attending car shows, where his enthusiasm and appreciation for craftsmanship and history were always evident. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor and his ability to make others laugh, bringing light and warmth into every room he entered.
He will be remembered for his strength, his independence, his kindness, and most of all, his deep love for his family. His presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and extended family, who will continue to honor his legacy in their hearts and memories.
Services will be held at Mount Auburn Funeral Home, 4101 South Oak Park Avenue, Stickney, Illinois, on Thursday, July 9, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, followed by a graveside service.
