Ruth was born in Norristown, Georgia on July 13, 1934. She was the daughter of George and Annie Mae (Woods) Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Richard C. Lewis, her daughter, Barbara Lewis Monteleone, and sister Sharon Williams Stewart. She is survived by sons, Richard (Rick) Lewis, Jr. and Steven Lewis, both of Stockbridge, Georgia; grandchildren, Robert Lewis (Wendy) of Little Rock, Arkansas; Amber Foos (Molly) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Jordan Lewis (Jessica) of Morrow, Georgia; five great-grandchildren Hudson, Kinley, Hadley, John Grant, and Alexandria; brother, Brooks (Ann) Williams of Pooler, Georgia; sister, Christine Williams Whitley of Peachtree City, Georgia; sister, Rita Douglas of Bloomingdale, Georgia and George Williams of Titusville, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
As the wife of a career Air Force veteran, Ruth was at Dick’s side wherever he was stationed. She spent time raising their children and visiting with family in Georgia whenever possible until returning to live in Georgia once again in 1968. As her children grew up, Ruth obtained a real estate license and began selling homes as a way to utilize her energy and people skills. In 1974, wanting to be of service within her local community, Ruth ran for, and was elected to, the Stockbridge City Council, making her the first female to be elected to serve as a Council Member for the City of Stockbridge.
Until their health no longer permitted it, Ruth and Dick were active members of Harvest Baptist Church. They enjoyed free time participating in multiple bowling leagues as well as boating with family and friends at Lakes Sinclair and Jackson. Although her final few years found her homebound, she was still able to enjoy the visits and calls of family members, particularly her grandchildren. She is known to end all phone calls with “Have a Blessed Day!” The family extends sincere appreciation for the gentle and experienced care provided by the staff at Sacred Journey Hospice.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024, at 1:00 pm at Fairview Memorial Gardens, 164 Fairview Road, Stockbridge, Georgia. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association, or to the Mt. Olivet Cemetery Association in Mrs. Lewis' memory are encouraged.
