

Betty Hendon was born in Atlanta in 1926 to George and Francis McLarty. Her father was an attorney turned Southern Baptist minister. Betty started playing the piano when she was nine years old and became proficient quickly. By age 14, she became the pianist for Temple Baptist Church where her father preached. In 1951, she married Wyman Hendon, and they were married for 39 years until his death in 1990. They moved to Stockbridge, Georgia in the late 1950s. She became the pianist for First Baptist Church of Stockbridge from 1957 to 1967. She then became the church pianist for Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Stockbridge from 1967 to 1972. Betty spent most of her working career as a supply clerk for the Georgia Army National Guard where she retired in 1986. After retirement she volunteered by playing the piano weekly at area nursing homes for the entertainment of residents. She was an incredible southern cook. She had three children: Sandra, Carol and Zack Hendon. Sandra and Carol predeceased Betty. Zack, her son is an attorney in Marietta. Zack is married to Jill Hendon and they have two sons, Luke (22) and Jake (20). Betty has a total of six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Sunday, January 14th 2018 between the hours of 12:30 pm to 3 pm at Horis A. Ward - Fairview Chapel. Funeral services will immediately follow visitation and will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 14th 2018 at Horis A. Ward - Fairview Chapel. Interment in Fairview Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
