

Mrs. Dorothy Burton Wilkes was born in Charlotte, N.C. on October 2, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Holsey and Marie (Bowers) Burton. She was the 2nd child born of seven children which were John Edward Burton, Holsey Burton Jr., Joseph Burton, Huey Burton, Lola (Burton) Donell, and Willie James Burton along with first cousin/brother Elijah Bowers Jr.
At the age of 17, she married Alonzo Wilkes Sr. and birthed 2 sons in holy matrimony. As a young girl, she always had a dream of becoming a singer; she decided to try and pursue that dream and moved to Brooklyn, New York in her early 20s. While being in New York she attended Erasmus Hall where she received certifications for sewing and typing. Her field of work consisted of working for the Board of Elections and the Swedish Hospital where she worked and retired as a Nurses’ Aid. After retirement, she decided to move to Newark, New Jersey to be with her son Ernest and his wife (Peggy) along with their children. In 1977, she moved to Decatur, Georgia where she resided for several years until she moved back to Greensboro, North Carolina to care for her aligning mother and brother (John Edward). After the passing of her brother (John Edward), she returned to Atlanta, Georgia where she lived out the duration of her years by spending quality time with her sons, grandchildren, and friends.
Dorothy served as a member of the Jehovah’s Witness organization, until her departure of life. She is preceded in death by her youngest son Ernest Wilkes. She leaves behind her eldest son Alonzo Wilkes Jr., and wife Lillian Delta-Wilkes. Her sister Lola Donell and husband Jim, as well as her 3 of 4 granddaughters Kimberly Mayfield, Ulonda Wilkes, La’Shunyne Wilkes, and Nakia (Wilkes) Young, proceeded in death her granddaughter Kisha Wilkes. Great-Grandchildren: Brittany (Smith) Barrino, husband Keith, Garrett Powell, Sydney Powell (Kimberly); Na’Quesha “Danielle” Jackson, Arayah Wilkes, Keyaaron Bowman (Ulonda); Ashley (Wilkes) Johnson, husband Victor (Kisha); Kenedi Wilkes, Travis “Kris” London (La’Shunyne); Skye Grady, Kylie Young, Zakari Williams (Nakia) Great-Great Children: Zaria, Cameren, Ja'Siah, Amari (Brittany); Corey “CJ” (Danielle), Madison “Maddie” & Zoey (Ashley). Along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Thursday, October 12, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Horis A. Ward Funeral Home - Fairview Chapel | 376 Fairview Road Stockbridge, Georgia 30281. A celebration of Dorothy's life will occur Friday, October 13, 2023 at 1:00 PM in Ward's Chapel. Services will conclude with a graveside committal at Fairview Memorial Gardens | 164 Fairview Road Stockbridge, Georgia 30281.
