Elisha “Melvin” Turner, age 82 of Stockbridge, passed away on August 26, 2019. He was born at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia on November 27, 1936. He grew up in College Park and spent most of his adult life in Riverdale and Stockbridge, Georgia. Since 2017, he has resided in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Melvin was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed attending his church. As a Christian he took pride in witnessing to other people.
Melvin worked hard to support his family. He was an auto mechanic and then found employment at Southern Railway. Afterwards, he was employed for many years at Owens Illinois glass plant maintenance department until he retired. He worked other jobs such as painting houses and laundry mats, and profitable hobbies of photography and woodworking. He enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, fishing, computers and raising tropical fish. He attended several woodturning groups, the Masonic Lodge, and was very involved with Georgia Council for the Blind with his late wife Barbara. Melvin really enjoyed learning new things and sharing his knowledge with others. He enjoyed socializing and making people laugh.
Melvin was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Barbara Nobles Turner (12/13/2010) and brother; Wendall Turner (8/25/1991). “Paw-Paw” Melvin is survived by his sister; Elsie Turner Breedlove, his 6 children; Wyatt Turner (Linda), Robynn Turner Boland (Mark Griffin), Craigg Turner (Brenda), Chris Turner (Trish), Trever Turner (Roxanne),Tara Turner Folden (Brian), 16 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and numerous other extended family.
Memorial service for Melvin will be on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 11:00am at Ellenwood Oaks Community Church, Pastor Dan Holley officiating. Family will receive friends on Saturday from 9am-11am at the Church. A meal will follow the service at the church. The graveside/inurnment ceremony will take place at 2:30pm at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Stockbridge. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to East Chapter of the G.C.B.
