

Gary was born July 8, 1948 in Atlanta, GA. He passed away at the age of 78 on September 27. He attended East Atlanta High School. Gary loved fast cars and racing. That love introduced him to the love of his life Becky. Gary and Becky were married in 1970.
Gary worked in home construction and remodeling for many years prior to starting at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the carpentry shop in 1985. He retired from there after 25 years of service in 2010. Gary passed his love of the Yellow Jackets to all 3 of his sons and grandchildren.
Gary was known as Mr. Fix-It by his family. He could build and repair almost anything. He was an excellent carpenter, mechanically inclined, and giving to others with his time. He helped so many people with various projects at their homes.
Gary coached youth sports for many years that built a love of sports for all 3 sons and many other players as well. He shaped and mentored young players building confidence, sportsmanship, competitiveness, and life lessons that impacted his players as they grew into young men and beyond. He remained in touch with players and their parents for many years after their playing days. Gary continued to be involved with sports and even coached as his children playing flag football as adults. He would travel to tournaments with the team and even scored a touchdown as a player/coach in his 50s. He truly loved being part of his sons lives.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents George and Kathryn Richardson, his in-laws J.T. and Lucille Gunter, as well as brothers-in-law Donald George and Larry Gunter.
Gary was a devoted and loving husband, Grampy, and Great-grandfather. Gary is survived by his wife of 56 years Becky (Baby Baby), three sons Shannon Fitzgibbon (Jana), Scotty Fitzgibbon (Heidi), and Darrell "PeeWee" Fitzgibbon (Amber), grandchildren Dalton, Micah, Jensen (Cameron), Sunny, Addison, Ellie, Asher, and Hannelise, great-grandson Wesley (Laila), future addition coming soon Gale, sister-in-law Brenda George, and several nieces and nephew. Gary was a fine example of a hardworking, loving man for all of his family. His influence and impact on them is his lasting legacy.
Visitation of Family and Friends will be held at Horis A. Ward - Fairview Chapel | 376 Fairview Road Stockbridge, Georgia 30281 on Monday, October 5, 2026 from 1:00 pm -2:00 pm followed by a memorial service in the Chapel at 2:00 pm. Gary's love of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets ran deep, so in his honor Georgia Tech attire is encouraged.
