He was preceded in death by his father George Edward Burns and his mother Frieda Louise Burns. He was also preceded by his brother Edward Burns. He is survived by his sister Ruth Hartz. George was born February 8, 1937, in Elgin, IL, and raised in Lake Geneva, WI. He graduated from Lake Geneva High School in 1955. He then joined the National Guard and soon after transferred to the United States Army.
George was proud to be a member of the 101 Airborne Division, the 1st Calvary Division and the Infantry. He proudly served in the Korean War and two tours in Vietnam. During his military service, George received many well-deserved military awards, medals, and decorations including but not limited to : National Defense Service Medal, Army Medal of Achievement, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal (six times), Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Combat Medal. The one he was most proud of was the Bronze Star Oak Leaf Cluster with the "V" device for valor for heroic achievement of service. Master Sergeant Burns retired from the United States Army December 31,1976.
George met the love of his life, Rosa Marie (Cash) Burns in Atlanta, GA, and they were married March 4, 1960, until she passed away December 17, 2007. George was a loving father to 7 children and proud grandfather of 11, great-grandfather of 10, and great-great-grandfather of 3 children.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and his family. He never met a dog he didn't love, and he had some pretty "mean" polka dance moves.
Family and friends are invited for visitation on Thursday, December 13, 2018, at Horis A. Ward Funeral Home Fairview Memorial Chapel, 376 Fairview Rd, Stockbridge, GA 30281 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., where funeral service will be held on Friday, December 14, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Interment service will be at 2:00 p.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the "Wounded Warrior Project."
