James Roger Cheney

James Roger Cheney, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather and friend passed away on September 29th, 2026 in Athens, Georgia, at the age of 92. He was born on May 30th, 1934 at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, to George and Irene Cheney. James lived a life filled with love and dedication, leaving behind a rich legacy for his family and community.

James grew up in Redan, Georgia as one of eight children. He later proudly served in the United States Air Force. After serving he was employed by Delta Air Lines where he worked as master mechanic until his retirement on May 29th, 1989. James enjoyed his love for the outdoors by hunting, fishing and boating. He was an avid golfer.

James is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Sylvia Cheney, to whom he was united in marriage to on January 15th, 1979. They enjoyed forty seven wonderful years together. He is also survived by his sister Francis Stephens, five children, Donna Jenkins, Gary Cheney, Tammy Ferrell, Leslie West and Steven Cheney. There are also six grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.

James is preceded in death by his father, George Cheney, mother Irene Cheney and six of his brothers and sisters.

Officiant: Pastor Stephen Jenkins, Graveside service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Fairview Memorial Gardens, 164 Fairview Road, Stockbridge, GA 30281. The family will receive friends, Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026 from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Horis A. Ward Fairview Chapel, 376 Fairview Road, Stockbridge, GA 30281.
