July 7, 1929March 23, 2020

Mr. Jeremiah "Jerry" Shepherd, age 90, went home to be with the Lord at his home in Monticello, Georgia on Monday, March 23, 2020.

Jeremiah is survived by his wife Sherry Shepherd of 24 years, his sons Larry (Malinda) Shepherd, Tony Shepherd and daughter, Elaine Robinson. (His daughter Geraldine (Robert) Adams passed in recent years.) He is also survived by his stepdaughters, Amy Hampton and Kimyetta (Vilroy) Hayden and their children David, Mark, and Hannah. Jerry is also survived by his sisters Ruth Shepherd and Ann (Richard) Etchison along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Born on July 7, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia to the parents of Mr. Daniel Shepherd and Mrs. Margaret Woodruff, Jerry's courage and determination helped him survive during the time of segregation and Jim Crow Laws in the south. He often shared stories of how much he and his family had to overcome in order to survive racism and inequality. He served in the U.S. Marines for two years.

At an early age, Jerry had a strong ability to build, repair and construct things. He started at Lockheed Corporation in 1951 and worked there for 37 years. Jerry was one of the first African Americans to work in non-maintenance jobs at Lockheed. During this time, he was married to his first wife Florene and together they raised four beautiful children and numerous grandchildren. He retired in 1989.

In 1992, as a widower, Jerry met his wife Sherry and they moved to Fayetteville. He came out of retirement to help build the Fayetteville Church of Christ facility where he later served on staff for several years.

Later in life, Jerry settled on 5 acres of land in Monticello, where he spent his last 17 years enjoying his life of farming, building, and spending time with family. Jerry accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and would often spend time reading his Bible, sharing scriptures and watching Christian Television. Today he's resting securely in the arms of Jesus forever into eternity.

We love you Jerry and we'll miss you!

Dear Jerry,
Thank you so much for everything you have taught me over the last 20 years since I have known you. You have shared so many words of wisdom with me. How to be a better dad to my kids. I have learned from you what it means to work hard and how to fix so many things around my house. Jerry I love you and even though you are no longer here with us in the flesh, your spirit surely lives on and the great memories you have left with us. Rest in the arms of Christ Jerry. We love you and we will miss you.

Dear papa, I remember all the lessons you taught me like how blessed we are to be able to live where we live and have the opportunities that we have to succeed. You also gave me my passion for engineering and a want to figure out how things work. But most of all you taught me a valuable lesson in hard work. You were always working with all your might in whatever you did. Your work ethic showed me that I’m not working as hard as I could in my 15 year old life. I promise you that from now on in everything I do I will put the kind of effort you put in everything you did. I won’t let you down.

Love-David

He never looked for praises
He was never one to boast
He just went on quietly working
For the ones he loved the most.

His dreams were seldom spoken
His wants were very few
And most of the time his worries
Went unspoken too.

He was there…A firm foundation
Through all our storms of life
A sturdy hand to hold on to
In times of stress and strife.

A true friend we could turn to
When times were good or bad
One of our greatest blessings
The man that we called Dad.

Rest in the care of Jesus...
Love your son, Larry and daughter in-law, Malinda Shepherd

I will just say Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. To his wife Sherry as well as his kids and family May every ones heart and soul find comfort and peace. I pray that as you face the days ahead that the memories will comfort your heart and soul. Uncle Jerry lived 90 glorious years which many of us pray to see I know his life was a blessed loved life. He was loved by many and will be truly missed. REST
