Kathryne Thurman Mitchell, age 100, died on Friday, June 29, 2018 in Waycross, GA. Mrs. Mitchell was born May 1, 1918 in Rex, Georgia to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Thurman. She began working for the Rex Postal Office when it was located in the back of The Rex Mercantile, her father’s store, and continued working for the postal service until she retired in 1983. She was a lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Stockbridge, Georgia and was often heard to say that she began attending Bethel even before she was born since that was where her parents attended church.
Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ray Mitchell. Survivors include her son, C. Thomas Mitchell (Betty) of St. Simons Island, GA, 4 grandchildren: Tim Mitchell of Atlanta, GA, Amanda Elder (John) of Houston, TX, Avery Coty (Danny) of Brunswick, GA and Megan Moore (Fritz) of Charlotte, NC, 5 great-grandchildren: Madisyn and Grace Coty, Elizabeth Moore and John and Britt Elder, and many Thurman cousins including Joan McElroy (Elliott) and Kathy Kerdsomboone.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 on Saturday, July 7th at Bethel United Methodist Church in Stockbridge, GA with Dr. Candy Thacker and Dr. Orin Sampson officiating. The family requests donations be made to the Baptist Village in Waycross, GA or Bethel United Methodist Church in Stockbridge, GA.
