A Love Story …
I was a shy, skinny, barefoot eight year old, playing outside in my front yard, when I first saw the little boy who had just recently moved into the house next door to ours. He was two years younger than I and a little on the chubby side, but I sure did want to meet him.
After a few minutes my next-door neighbor found the nerve to slowly approach me, as I pretended not to notice him. He got within a few feet of me when all at one I looked at him, stepped on a bee with my bare foot, and ran into the house screaming and crying for my mom.
Well, the new boy didn't know I had stepped on a bee; he just knew that for some reason he surely didn't make a very good impression on me. He went running into his house to hide so that he wouldn't get into trouble. After my mom calmed me down, she walked next door to tell my future husband and his mother what had happened and that it wasn't his fault. After that we became good friends and enjoyed each other's for many years to follow.
My good friend and I were separated when I went off to college for two years, and also a few years later when he joined the Air Force for a four-year enlistment.
He had been in the Air Force for about a year when I began to realize how much I missed having him around. I couldn't believe how my feelings for him were changing; after all, this guy was my next door neighbor and two years my junior. No, this couldn't be!
My special friend came home on leave, and I was so very happy to see him again. He invited me to go to a drive-in movie with him one night. This wasn't anything surprising; after all, we had spent time together for years, as friends. But, this was different in that he got up nerve to kiss me for the first time. I wasn't even sure I liked it because it surprised me so, and he was afraid it would spoil our long friendship.
It didn't spoil our friendship, because we stayed friends forever, but it did make us realize the love we had for each other, which had grown over the years.
We were so excited we wanted to share our feelings with our parents and neighbors. Do you know what they said? "We've known for years that you two were in love. What took you so long to discover it?"
My best friend and I got married on May 16, 1964, and we had two daughters, who have made us very proud parents. We also had one granddaughter and three grandsons, plus many happy memories. I thanked God every day for placing that little chubby boy next door to me and that my future husband cared enough to pursue our friendship.
Love,
Kay
