Al was a true example of a southern born guy. The funniest storyteller, loyal friend, avid bowler and lover of all things outdoors; fishing, hunting, basketball and golf. Al played basketball for Lithonia High School, Auburn University, and then semi-pro in Switzerland.
In 1971, Al met the love of his life “Sam” on a flight with Southern Airways. Sam was the flight attendant that day. Sam and Al were married 46 years. Al was happiest outdoors. His love for hunting and fishing was shared with many of his life-long buddies. Sitting around the campfire, Al kept everyone laughing with the tales of his everyday life. Al never met a stranger. He would go out of his way to help anyone.
Al’s pride and joy were his wife, Evelyn (“Sam”), son Britt, grandson Jordan, and stepchildren Robert and Morgan, who he considered his own.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, Annie Smith Leapheart and Knowlton Albert Leapheart, Sr.; and two sisters, Jane L. Kiber and Pat L. Duda.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sam; son, Britt (Krystal); sister, Libbey Smigel; grandson, Jordan; stepchildren, Robert and Morgan; many nieces, nephews and life-long friends.
A visitation of family and friends will be held for Al on Saturday, January 29, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Horis A. Ward Funeral Home - Fairview Chapel | 376 Fairview Road Stockbridge, Georgia 30281, followed by a celebration of life memorial service at 1:00 PM in Ward's Chapel.
