Ray was born in Liggett, KY to the late John Raymond McCreary and Lillian Mae (Adkins) McCreary. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy on a Destroyer during the Korean War. After more than twenty-five years in law enforcement, he retired from the Henry County Sheriff’s Department. In his retirement years, Ray enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and spending time in the mountains of Tennessee and Kentucky.
Ray was a longtime member of the North Henry Baptist Church, where he always looked forward to attending Sunday school, church and church fellowships. He enjoyed keeping up with his friends from church even after he was unable to attend services due to the church closing because of the COVID-19 Virus. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 0400 and DAV.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his three brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joyce Marie (Davis) McCreary of Stockbridge, GA; brother-in-law, Byron Steven Davis of Mobile, AL; one niece, Melissa Davis Lerch (Kevin) of Mobile, AL; and two great-nieces, Lauren Rebecca Lerch and Sarah Caroline Lerch of Mobile, AL.
During Ray’s long life, he experienced much joy, but also many losses. Despite the difficult times, especially at the very end, he always kept his faith, lived a grace-filled life, and looked forward to the day he would be reunited with his Lord and numerous loved-ones in Heaven. He lived a simple motto – “You are not going to go until it’s your time.” He will be greatly missed.
A graveside funeral service will be held at Fairview Memorial Gardens, 164 Fairview Road Stockbridge, GA 30281 on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Stan Jordan of North Henry Baptist Church, officiating.
