Richard was raised in and around Cedar Grove until he graduated high school. He joined the Army shortly after graduating and married his wife, Sarah Sexton Adams, the first time, January 5, 1968, and a couple more times thereafter. Richard served in the United States Army from November 1965 to October 1968. He then pursued a career as an aircraft mechanic, starting with Republic and then Northwest Airlines. He was promoted to Airline Inspector prior to retiring.
Daddy had an amazing sense of humor but was almost always the “quiet one”. He let mama do all the talking and talk she did! He enjoyed playing guitar and singing to the family and sometimes mama joined in with him. Daddy didn’t have many hobbies but the ones he did have were expensive! He loved anything to do with airplanes, flying them, working on them, breaking them so he could work on them, looking at them, and reading about them. He had a tendency to purposely scare the people he would fly around, and no one was immune to his shenanigans. When he retired from the airlines, he would tell anyone who asked why he didn’t get a new hobby or volunteer somewhere, “I am R-E-T-I-R-E-D”. Nevertheless, he did do a few small and odd jobs to stay busy such as dry-cleaning carpet and driving for a limousine company. Daddy loved to hear people’s stories and he rarely repeated them, mostly because he would forget as soon as he heard them.
Daddy was an animal lover too and passed that right down to his children and grandchildren! He would bring home stray animals and listen to mama rant about them (though she never wanted him to get rid of them). He loved his girls (all three of them) and will be missed very much! Until then, fly high Daddy - keep it steady and don’t forget to turn on the fuel line!
Preceded in death by his wife of over 58 years, Sarah Sexton Adams, his parents Harold and Jewell Adams, his brothers Sterling, Eugene, Michael “Mickey”, Bobby, and Larry, and his only sister, Joyce Adams Guthas.
Survived by his daughters, Sabrina (Lewis) Jordan and Rhonda (Case) Taylor, his grandchildren, Amber (Cody) Sanders, Brittany and Jeremy Jordan, grand-dogs (Zuko, Lady, Daisy, Loca), great grand-dogs (Tank and Jade), and great grand-kitties (Shadow, Nala, and Raven). Also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews and extended family.
Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not [a]want.
He makes me to lie down in [b]green pastures;
He leads me beside the [c]still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will [d]dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever.
