Mirian Cofield Settles was born to Amos and Idella Cofield on 3/10/31, in Aberdeen, Mississippi. She joined her siblings Thelma and Onetha, and later Gladys, Amos, and Gloria were born into the family. She enjoyed her parent's farm and often shared many fond stories of her childhood. The family moved to St. Louis in 1944. This is where she met her husband, Melvin Settles, whom she cherished and adored. Mirian referred to her loving husband as Mel. They kissed and held hands during their entire 69 years of marriage.
Melvin joined the Army and Mirian quickly made each military residence into a lovely family home. She fearlessly squared off with anyone, without hesitation, to protect her family. She made friends with many military wives and they have remained life-long friends.
Mirian enjoyed sewing, shopping, bingo, walking in the neighborhood, attending Progressive Community Church, listening to music, and keeping in touch with family. Mirian worked as a part-time sales clerk at Macy's, teacher aid for Stockton Unified School District, but her most important job was monitoring her children. She wasn't bossy, she just had very strong ideas about what they should be doing!
Mirian's husband predeceased her by nine days. She is survived by her children, Deborah, Melvin Jr., Kim, Craig, and Marci; grandchildren, Angela, Demian, Jazmine, Kianna, Craig Jr.; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Cheyenne, Alexis, Ryan, and Christian; great-great grandchild, Jayden; brother, Dr. Amos Cofield.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 8, 2019, at DeYoung Memorial Chapel from 3-7 p.m., with a funeral on Wednesday, October 9, 2019, at Progressive Community Church at 11:00 a.m.
