Artis grew up and went to school in Memphis before relocating to California in the 1960s. He owned and operated a Texaco gas station in Oakland, California before moving to San Jose where he worked as a Custodian for the Franklin McKinley School district for over 25 years. He then worked as a maintenance man for VPM Management for almost 15 years before retiring in the Fall of 2018.
Artis was a very kind and loving man who loved everyone, and everyone loved him. He loved the 49ers and enjoyed attending barbeques and spending time with family, friends and loved ones. Artis was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Carbonel-Exum of Monterey, California; his sister, Gwendolyn Hurd of Memphis, TN, and his brothers: Ben Jones of Memphis, TN; Thomas Jones of Memphis, TN; Solomon Jones of Chicago, IL; Dock Exum of Memphis, TN; Mike Exum of Memphis, TN.
Artis leaves to cherish his memory: his sons, Arcadio Exum of Indianapolis, Indiana; Trovoy McKinney of Tracy, CA, and Loree McKinney of Fresno, CA; 9 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren, and along with a whole host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
