Craig McClure passed away on July 21, 2021, at the age of 86. After months of declining health, Craig died peacefully at his home in Linden, CA, with his wife Caryl and daughter by his side. He was born on April 12, 1935, in Arcata, CA to Vince and Vera McClure and is preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Barry McClure. His family lived in Arcata, Napa and Quincy before moving to Susanville, CA, in the 1940’s.
Craig graduated from Lassen Union High School in 1953, a life member of CSF. He attended the University of Nevada, Reno, before transferring to Chico State where he completed his college education and graduated with a civil engineering degree. Craig married Caryl Hayes in 1956 while students at Chico State College.
He worked summers in high school for the Forest Service and fought forest fires in the area, including the Eagle Lake fire. After moving to Chico, he worked for Butte County Public Works for 2 years as a Junior Civil Engineer. In 1960, Craig began working for A. Teichert Construction as an Estimator, 8 years in Chico and 28 years in their Stockton office. His expertise was in state and county highways, covering 19 counties from Trinity in the North down to Merced in the South. When he was the low bidder for a project, he could then take on a different role as Project Engineer. Craig was very proud of receiving a contract for the Crosstown Freeway in Stockton.
Craig loved sports, especially golf. He also enjoyed fishing and fished at the Sea of Cortez, Pacific Ocean and all over Northern California. Craig also enjoyed photography, taking and matting his pictures which he entered in local contests, winning many awards.
Craig and Caryl stayed in 54 B&B’s over the years, including California, Oregon, and Washington. After retirement they enjoyed cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal, taking Tauck Tours with friends stateside. He enjoyed visiting with everyone, anywhere, anytime!
Craig will be dearly missed by his loving family; wife Caryl, and his two daughters, Deanna Herman of Folsom, and Laure Zmurk of Linden. Craig was very loved and respected as well by his grandchildren: Mark and Miranda Herman, Emily and Audrey Zmurk, and great granddaughter Quinn (Mark Herman).
A private service was held for family on August 14 at the Linden Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life will be held for family and the community on Friday, August 27, at 10:00 AM at the Linden Baptist Church on Hwy 26. All are welcome to attend. Due to the rise in Covid cases and to help ensure the safety of everyone, refreshments will not be provided following the service.
