My deepest sympathy to the family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

It has been said that most people , in the course of their lifetime, have less than a half dozen really close friends ....someone you never tire of being with, someone you can share your closest secrets to knowing you won't be judged, and someone you can fish with.  Dan Micenheimer was my friend!  We first met in the navy, in Hawaii.  I was a young Airman (E-3) and Dan was a 2nd Class Petty Officer, in charge of the barracks where we lived.  We hit it off right away.  We spent many weekends on liberty together in Honolulu, just sharing a few beers and talking .....solving the worlds problems.  On the way back to the base (Naval Air Station Barbers Point), we'd stop at a little late night restaurant in Waipahu, and eat a bowl of fried rice and listen to Ray Charles sing, "Georgia", on the jukebox.  We also spent a lot of Sundays fishing the jetties on the base and caught Tilapia in some of the irrigation ponds in the pineapple fields and the lake at Schofield Barracks Army base.  As I was promoted through the ranks, I eventually was authorized a two-man room (as opposed to the 50-man open bays) and my roommate was Dan.

Dan and I was stationed together again in San Diego, at Helicopter ASW Squadron 10.  We renewed our fishing adventures in all the reservoirs around Southern California, taking our catch to my house and getting my wife, Rema, to fry us up some super fish dinners. We also continued our late night discussions, solving the world's problems.  Dan always had time for me as I always had time for him.  He was a GOOD man!

We finished our respective careers in the Navy  ....Dan went back home to Stockton and I sunk roots in Jacksonville, Fl  (I did get to see Dan once in Stockton when I was going through an Air Navigation course at Mather Air Force Base, in Sacramento).  But we stayed in contact by phone over the years, and Dan was always interested in my son as he made his career in the Army.  Try as I might though, I couldn't get Dan to make a trip to Florida, so we could fish the waters here. Its not in the nature of most men our age to display their emotions, but I bawled like a baby when Dan's brother Michael, called me with the sad news that Dan had passed on. I will miss him greatly!
