Ernest Fred "Ernie" Tavella was born April 4, 1921 in Stockton, to Ernesto Luigi and Emelia Brassesco Tavella, both immigrants from Northern Italy. He died peacefully at home November 3, 2014 after a short illness.
Ernie was the youngest of 9 children, one of a third set of twins in the family. His father died when he was 10 years old. Ernie carried on the family livelihood of farming for many years, both in Stockton and Lodi, and then started a second career working for Albert Paper Company.
Ernie met his beloved wife, Mary Formento, of Lodi, at a dance in Clements in 1941. They were married 45 years before Mary died in 1989. Ernie continued living in the same house where they raised their 3 children, Ernie Tavella (Mary) of Capitola, John Tavella (Elise) of San Jose and Carla Hose (Wayne) of Stockton. Ernie also leaves his 7 grandchildren: Christina Hall (Chip), E.J. Tavella (Becky), Jennifer Willoughby (Chris), David Hose, Emily Hose, Mark Tavella (Jessica) and Molly Maher (Eric), and 9 great-grandchildren: Sabrina and Tommy Hall, Emma, Kate and Sofia Tavella, Brooke and Claire Willoughby and Milly and Marco Tavella. Ernie is also survived by his beloved companion, Jan Kjera.
Ernie never forgot a family birthday or special occasion, always acknowledging his loved ones with a card and check.
Ernie enjoyed making his family wine, Vino da Tavella, for many years and every year the entire family gathered at "Nonu's" after Thanksgiving to make Tavella family sausage. Ernie was an active member of the Italian Athletic Club and the Lodi Italian Club. Visitation for Ernie will be held at DeYoung Shoreline Chapel 7676 Shoreline Dr. Stockton on Thursday 11/6/2014 from 10am to 5pm Funeral service will be Fri. 11/7/2014 10am at DeYoung Shoreline Chapel.
