She was the great-grandmother to Timothy Ybarra, Matthew Ybarra, Abby Fry, Molly Fry, Malia Ybarra, Javier Hurtado III and BellaMarie Hurtado. Esther was preceded in death by her parents Antonio and Guadalupe Romero, her mother-in-law and father-in-law Juan and Cenobia Torres, her son Ronald Edward Torres, brother Paul Montalvo and sisters Eva Velasquez, Lupe Castellanos and Victoria Leos.
Esther was born on March 5, 1933 in Lodi, California and raised in Woodbridge, California. She attended Woodbridge Elementary and Lodi High School.
Esther met the love of her life John Torres in 1949 when he came to visit the family. Sparks flew and soon they were dating. John proposed to Esther in 1951 and they were married in 1952. Soon after, John was drafted to the United States Army. They were apart while he served his tour during the Korean War. During this time, they wrote hundreds of letters to one another. John was discharged in 1954. They settled in Stockton, California to start their family and were happily married for 69 years.
Esther and John welcomed their first son, John Torres III in 1955. They welcomed their second son, Ronald Edward Torres in 1957. Valerie Torres followed in 1960. Finally, Yvette Marie Torres came in 1964.
Esther’s priority and most important role was being a wife and mother. She made sure her children were always cared for and protected. She was involved and active in school and sport activities for all of her children. She would oversee and organize school luncheons and festivities.
She loved and enjoyed being a grandmother. However, she was not just a grandmother; she was “Mama” to all of her grandchildren. She watched all of them grow up in her house.
Esther was a happy and cheerful woman. She enjoyed dancing, mariachi music, going to Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas, eating out, shopping and getting her hair and nails done. She looked forward to birthday and holiday celebrations. However, what she enjoyed most was having her family together at the house.
The family would like to thank the staff at Windsor Elm Haven who took care and looked over “Mama Esther” with love and kindness.
