J.A. “Bud” Engstrom, 82, of Stockton, CA passed away peacefully on August 31, 2018 with his family by his side. He courageously fought Heart Disease for the last 25 years, 9 months and 7 days. Bud is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara; his three children Ronald Engstrom (Donna), Steven Engstrom (Carlyn) and Kimberlyn Engstrom; and his 2 grandchildren Ross Engstrom and Cole Engstrom. He is preceded in death by his siblings Charlie, Albertine, Joyce, S.W.(Bob) and Chester. He is survived by siblings Betty, Virginia, and Marvin and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was born in Mingus, Texas on April 23, 1936 and was the loving son on Albert and Lucille Engstrom. He was one of nine children. The Engstrom family moved to California in 1940 and finally settled in the Linden area in 1943. He graduated from Delphi Grammar School in 1951and from Linden High School in 1955. In high school he had many accomplishments. In his freshman year he got his varsity high school letter. He was president of his sophomore class and student body president his senior year. He was chosen by the faculty to represent Linden at the Boys State Tournament in Sacramento, CA. He pole-vaulted 10’4” using a stiff bamboo pole. In baseball, he struck out 14 players in 7 innings, pitched one no-hitter game and many one-hitter games. In basketball, his highest point score was 12, and they did not have a 3-point circle. His longest run in football was 75 yards. He played American Legion baseball for Manual Rojas and was on the all-stars for radio station KWG.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1956 and was sworn in in San Francisco, then processed in Fort Ord, Monterey, and did basic training in Fort Carson, Colorado. After passing O58 School (Morse Code) in Fort Devons, Massachusetts, he went on to O59 School (Teletype). After graduating from O59 School, he went on to serve 1 year, 11 months, 28 days in Chitose, Hokkaido, Japan.
In 1962, he became a Deputy Marshall for the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department and retired 33 years later.
In 1974, he earned his AA degree in Police Science from Delta College
In 1990, he participated in the Police Olympics and placed 3rd in Golf, earning a bronze medal.
In 2004, using a 5 iron, he shot a 167-yard hole-in-one at Oakmoore Golf Course, Stockton, CA. His best golf scores were a 68 at Van Buskirk, a 71 at Swenson Park, and a 71 at Stockton Golf & Country Club.
He enjoyed traveling and loved spending time with his family and friends as well as his golfing buddies. He will always be remembered for his kind hearted, loving and caring personality.
Visitation: Monday, Sep 10, 2018 from 1pm to 6pm at DeYoung Shoreline Chapel in Stockton. Vigil will be held at the Chapel at 6pm.
Services: Tuesday Sep 11, 2018 at 10am at Presentation Church in Stockton; Burial will immediately follow at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi.
