James Arthur Ellison

Butch was born December to John H. Ellison and Shirley T. Ellison in French Camp, California. Butch died July 5, 2026, at the age of 74 at his residence in Stockton. James attended Edison High School, and in his later years San Joaquin Delta College, where he achieved the Dean’s List.

Butch served in the US Airforce for three and a half years. He was based at Vandenberg Airforce base, Lompoc, California, and spent a year at Ankara Air Station in the nation of Turkey. Butch reached the rank of sergeant as a Law Enforcement Specialist. He served from January 1971 to June 1974.

James was truly a jack of all trades. He spent time as an auto mechanic, autobody repair specials (where he owned his own shop), carpenter, handyman and apartment maintenance manager. Throughout his life Butch used his skills to help people in need and would adjust his service price to meet the client’s ability to pay.

Butch was a friend to all. He loved people and sharing time with groups was one of his passions. He loved to spend time with family and friends. He loved the outdoors, being there bringing him endless joy. He loved outdoor family and friend events. He would set up a gathering or picnic in a minute, whether at a local park, lake, his or someone’s house. You were invited whether you were family or family adjacent. Fishing in the Delta was a favorite, whether by boat or from the shore.

Butch had a keen sense of humor and could tell a story or joke with enthusiasm that captivated people and made everyone laugh.

Butch was an accomplished artist in multiple medians: drawing, painting, ceramics, carving, and wood reliefs. Butch’s artistic skills were honor with private art gallery shows.

Butch was a huge Star Wars fan and had many collectibles. His goodbye to all was, “May the force be with you.”

Butch will be remembered for his kindness, humor, generosity, and resilience. He is survived by his siblings, Elgenia (Sissy) Ellison-Perez, Johnny Ellison, Donald Ellison, Kathleen Massey, David Ellison; daughters, Ellison Quinonez-Westland, and Ingrid Anderson, ex-wife Debra Ellison. He is also survived by grand and great grandkids, nieces and nephews. Butch was preceded in death by both parents, brother and sisters, Silva Ellison, Ralph and Valerie Weaver, and stepchildren Toni and Chuck Parker-Ellison.

Butch will deeply be missed by all that knew him.
