

Jay C. McIlrath, beloved local businessman, passed away at home on Monday, January 18, 2016. One of seven siblings, Mr. McIlrath was born and raised near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before his adventurous spirit led him to California. He met wife of 54 years, Mary, at the Christian Missionary Alliance Church where he served on the board. They started Stockton Petroleum Company in 1967, which was one of Northern California’s first Exxon distributors. His family continues their legacy in the fuel industry and will celebrate their 50th business anniversary next year. He and Mary were longtime members of Elkhorn Country Club, where they hosted the popular Columbus Day Golf Adventure, as well as of the First Baptist Church of Stockton and the Pacific Athletic Foundation. Mentor to many, he set a benchmark for hardwork and dedication. He is remembered for his generous contributions to the community, sense of humor, and kind spirit. His family cherishes the joyful weekend dinners and Aptos summers generously provided by their grandparents and are grateful for the many wonderful years they were able to spend together. He was preceded in death by beloved wife Mary (née Sweem) and by siblings Mary, Hannah, Johnny, and Robert. He is survived by loyal wife Jane (née Baker); loving children Dan McIlrath (Melissa), Cheryl Steel-Kruse (Steve), and Lori Toccoli; devoted grandchildren Jennifer Willson, Heidi McHenry, Jason Steel, Kristen McIlrath, Stefanie Steel, Jonathan Toccoli, Daniel McIlrath Jr., and Brittney Kloeppel; and great-grandchildren Michael, T.J., Madison, Emma, McKenzie, and Mason. He is also survived by sisters Betty (of South Carolina) and Grace (of Pennsylvania). Friends and loved ones are invited to celebrate Mr. McIlrath’s abundant life. A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 24, from 10:00am to 5:00pm at DeYoung Shoreline Chapel, 7676 Shoreline Drive, Stockton. The funeral will be held Monday, January 25, at 1:00pm at First Baptist Church, 3535 N. El Dorado, Stockton. Committal at Cherokee Memorial Park to follow, Hwy 99 at Harney Ln. Lodi CA.
