With deep gratitude for a life filled with love, we celebrate the memory of a wonderful woman whose kindness, humor, and devotion to her family touched all who knew her: our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, Josephine Benitez.
Born Josephine Olivia Garcia in Denver, Colorado, in 1940 to Stanley and Josephine Garcia, she spent the majority of her life in Stockton, California, where she built a beautiful family and created a home filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories. Her early years were marked by hard work and determination. She graduated high school and began working in a cannery before pursuing and earning her cosmetology license. She later married the young man, Richard Benitez, who had captured her heart, beginning their lifelong, 67-year partnership rooted in love, friendship, and shared dreams. Together they built a family that became the center of her world.
She was loving, kind, witty, and wonderfully funny, with a gift for making people feel welcome and cared for. As a mother and grandmother, she was fiercely protective and deeply devoted. She encouraged her children and grandchildren to learn, grow, and pursue lives filled with purpose and fulfillment. One of her greatest joys came from watching her family flourish through each new generation.
Among the many lessons she shared, one stood above the rest: never carry bitterness in your heart. She believed that even when others caused pain, forgiveness and compassion were stronger than resentment. Through her words and example, she taught her family the grace and understanding that shaped our lives.
Josephine is survived by her three children: her sons, Richard Benitez (Lori) and Derek Benitez (Crissy) of Sacramento; and her daughter, Debra Benitez (Rodney) of Jackson. She leaves behind a legacy of family through her five grandchildren, Bryce Guiffra (Kate) of El Dorado Hills, Natalee Cooks (Worth), Ashlee Benitez, and Megan Anderson (Dontay) of Stockton; and Tiffany Benitez of Sacramento, as well as 15 great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart; her siblings, Kathleen Ramos of Rohnert Park, Mary Chavez, Stanley Garcia, William Garcia (Judy), Teresa Brown, Louis Garcia (Phyllis), Jovita Gomez, and Carmen Galedo (Don), all of Stockton.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard Benitez (2026); her father, Stanley Garcia (1985); mother, Josephine Aldrete Garcia (2004); and her beloved siblings, sister Marie Oxley (2006); brother Arthur Garcia (2010); and sister Pauline Pangilla (2021).
Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the values she instilled, and the countless lives she touched with her warm heart, quick wit, and enduring love.
