It was an honor to know Tom and to coach against his Stagg HS teams over the years. In addition to preparing his great teams, Tom was always an advocate for the sport he loved and the integrity of the game. Condolences to the Conway family.

I have so many memories and lessons learned from Coach Conway.  His impact on me, teammates and english students are too numerous to list in this forum. (I tried unsuccessfully to uploaded a file of 2 ½ pages of memories for Maureen and family.  Below is the first six paragraphs). 

It is an undisputed fact.  Coach Conway certainly left a positive impact on hundreds, perhaps thousands of young men and women (he was also an English teacher and used Sport Illustrated magazines and articles as a teaching tool for creative writing).  

My latest memory was on November 20, 2019.  It was at the Stockton Civic Center’s Hall of Fame ceremony inducting Coach Conway (finally!) and the 1972-73 (28-0), 1971-72 (25-0) Stagg High School Delta Kings.  See “Delta Kings ruled in early ’70s” https://www.recordnet.com/article/20051020/sports/5102 where Coach Conway introduced a ‘new (original and innovative) way of basketball.’  
Coach Conway expressed that night he was proud of the hard working and gifted coaches who guided us during hundreds of games and practices (perfecting our offense - ‘the passing game’, instilling relentless half/full court pressing defense(s) and the approaches where we accomplished near perfect free throws percentages we achieved during the 1970s. That is Coach Conway.  

Never once during his 2019 Fame of Hall acceptance speech did, he take credit of the significant accomplishments he personally achieved.  For example, Coach Conway’s winning percentage was over 90% (emphasis added) during those early years.  Perhaps one of the reasons he was named California’s Coach of the Year in 1974!

He truly changed the world for the better (request more memories from Basketball and football).

So sad to hear about Coach passing last week. i was fortunate to attend Stagg 69-71 and have fond memories of him as a great person and was my P.E. teacher for two of those years.

Coach Conway got his start as a Head Coach in basketball at St. Mary’s HS coaching the 1969 SM Rams. That team won the Mountain Valley League Championship with a perfect 12 and 0 record. From there Coach went on to coach at Stagg High and Modesto JC. Coach was a great guy and will be missed. The 1969 Rams send our condolences to your wife Maureen and all your family. RIP Coach!
