Warren L. Reichert, whose newspaper career spanned forty years including twenty eight years at the Stockton Record, died August 13, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. He was 91 years old. Warren joined the Record staff in January 1959 on the rewrite desk and as a general assignment reporter. He also worked on the copy desk and edited many special sections. Later he worked as an assistant city editor and a Sunday editor when the Record went to seven days publication. Previously Warren worked at the Sacramento Union for ten years as a copy reader and wire editor. Also he worked for the Daily newspapers in Illinois, Wyoming, and Kansas after graduating from the school of Journalism at the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Journalism degree. Warren was a veteran of WWII. He served in both the European and Pacific theaters with an engineering maintenance company. He was in Europe when WWII ended and was deployed directly to the Philippines to help prepare bases for the invasion on Japan. However when his troop’s ship was a week from port the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan and the war in the Pacific abruptly ended. After VJ day Warren joined the staff of the Daily Pacifican, an army newspaper in Manila and returned to the United States for a discharge from the Army. He then returned to the University to complete his Bachelor’s Degree. A native of New York City Warren was reared in suburban Maywood, New Jersey. He was educated in local schools and junior college and transferred to Mizzou. Warren was a life member and past Commodore of the Port Stockton Boaters, a long time member of Alanon (for relatives and friends of alcoholics) and the Newspaper Guild (AFLCIO). Warren is survived by his sister Judy (Bill) Fredericks of Sun City West, Arizona; four nephews; a niece and a stepdaughter Carol June Moody of San Leandro. There will be no funeral services held, but after cremation his remains will be interred in the Stockton Rural Cemetery alongside his wife Dorothy and daughter Sylvia.
