David is survived by his children Roy (Catherine), Tavis (Sarah), Eva (Kevin), and Jon; his grandchildren Caius, Ryker, Arwen, Mallory, and Cadence; his siblings Joan and Robert (Lorie); his sisters-in-law and many neices and nephews; and his step-mom Marilyn and step-siblings Jane and Patti.
David was predeceased by his wife Janine, his mother Marie, his father Roy, his brothers Tom and Jim, and his sisters Ann and Mary.
David was born the 3rd son of Marie and Dr. Roy Saito, the veterinarian after whom the Saito Centre at the Edmonton Valley Zoo is named. After graduating from high school, he proceeded to live a nomadic lifestyle for a few years and during this time David met Janine; nine months later on September 15, 1978 they were married, and they lived happily for almost 40 years before Janine passed away in 2017. It was during those early years of marriage that they went from a small house in Sherwood Park to a 14-acre farm and had 4 children. He also became an active troupe leader for Scouts, and helped to reimagine the interactivity within the troupes. He would continue to mentor and enrich his children’s lives, and so many others, until the day he died. An innovator, a creator, a go-getter, a dreamer, a real-life MacGyver. David found meaning in creating opportunities for people to make memories. He never gave up on his family and friends or on himself, which is why he was able to live, and live well, with stage 4 cancer for over a decade.
He was a loving son, a trusted brother, an adoring husband, a devoted father, and a loyal friend. Generous of spirit and a friend to all, David will be remembered fondly.
In accordance with the family's wishes, a celebration of his life will be held at the Saito Farm later in August. If you would like to attend, please email [email protected].
