Ivan was born on July 9, 1934, in Stony Plain Alberta and raised on a farm where he learned the significance of hard work. From the farm, he found himself hotel bunking in Jasper Alberta working for the Arctic Ice Company, loading ice blocks onto CN railcars.
Following his brother Wilfred to Moose Jaw, he met the love of his life Olive, where they married September 1, 1959. He was Baptized in 1960 and became a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Ivan and Olive spent many years strengthening their faith along with their church community. During this time, Ivan worked as supervisor in Moose Jaw at Canadian Pittsburg Industries Ltd. and then later as Receiver at the Kalium Potash Mine.
Retirement gave Ivan the opportunity to join Olive, volunteering at Providence Place in Moose Jaw. A 'job' they thoroughly enjoyed together which he continued even following Olive’s passing in 1999.
Gardening was a love of Ivan’s, as was sharing his harvest with anyone. He graciously gave up his garden one summer so Michael could practice driving the Austin Mini where the tomatoes would have grown. Ivan was self-taught in making delicious jams and jellies from the berries he looked forward to picking each summer.
A ‘sport of all sorts’ enthusiast; Hockey Night in Canada had him cheering so loudly and stomping his feet that he eventually got banned to the basement. He was a Toronto Blue Jays fan through and through.
He was a car buff, fanatic of all makes and models. A clean shiny vehicle was important, and he particularly enjoyed reaping the benefits of his hard work after buying a fixer-upper and 'working' on it to completion.
He was an avid fisherman teaching us all the tricks of landing 'a big one' or fileting what he ‘actually’ caught. A weekend was well spent if it involved an ice-fishing tent, relaxing in his canoe on a peaceful lake in the mountains, or casting off the dock of Buffalo Pound Lake. The cabin at the lake had many family bar-b-ques where the Grandchildren hopped in his Datsun truck while he drove the bumpy gravel roads rocking them to sleep.
Beyond all else, Ivan was a family man and friends were considered family. He was always available to lend a hand with any repairs, advice or just a listening ear. It was taught that, at family meals or sitting in a lawn chair at an outdoor concert, nothing was to be eaten before giving thanks. These meals were rarely complete without a helping of ice cream.
Ivan loved to travel with his family. Many summer vacations to the United States and Northern Saskatchewan with trailer in tow made for long lasting memories of family fun. A great sense of pride along with many camping adventures were had while Ivan fulfilled the role of Boy Scout Leader.
He moved back to Stony Plain in 2013 to be closer to Shauna, Kent and Michael; when he too, returned to the Edmonton area. Lunch dates, excursions to Jasper, weekend cabin stays in David Thompson and even zip lining in Vegas are just a few treasured memories.
Ivan felt blessed to have schoolmates to join for a daily coffee, allowing them to reminisce on old times and solve world events. He found much peace in belonging to the St. Matthew Lutheran Church congregation in Stony Plain. For all those family and friends that were dear to his heart, Ivan made sure to stay close by sending emails, making weekly phone calls and taking trips to Moose Jaw for his 'catching up'.
Ivan is predeceased by his wife, Olive; parents, Clarence and Alma; sisters: Pearl, Norma and Evelyn; brother-in-law Bert; brother, Wilfred and sister-in-law, Jean.
Ivan is lovingly remembered and forever missed by son, Michael; daughter, Shauna; son-in-law, Kent; granddaughter, Taryn (great grandchildren Zac, Logan and Noah); grandson, Ryan (Robyn, Ellis and Beckett); grandson, Devin (Colleen) and great granddaughter, Alice; brother, Keith (Margaret); nephew, Darren (Iris) Cassandra and Steven; nieces: Anna, Helen, Doris and their families; many many wonderful and loving friends, especially his coffee buddy Mr. Ed..
Those who knew Ivan know he'd rather not be fussed over and would much rather give than receive. To honor Ivan’s wishes, there will be an interment for family and friends at a later date, where he will be laid to rest alongside the love of his life, Olive.
If desired family and friends may make donations in Ivan’s memory to a charity of choice.
