Katie was born and raised on her family’s estate in Böddensell, Germany. After surviving the war in Germany, she met the love of her life, Ivo, at the age of 21. In the summer of 1951, Ivo proposed to Katie, and he vowed to create a better life for both of them in Canada. In July 1952, Ivo set out to Canada, and ten months later, Katie made the same life-changing, 11-day trek.
Ivo organized a small wedding ceremony, and on May 15, 1953, the day after Katie arrived, they were married in a tiny church in Kitscoty, Alberta. Soon after, they settled in Sangudo, Alberta, where, with hard work and perseverance, they established a thriving hog farm, raised three children and built a loving home filled to the brim with German pride.
We will remember Ami most for her strong spirit, her courageous heart, her irresistible joy and true fortitude. She knew that hard work was the path to a good life, but laughter, good food and good friends made it that much sweeter. Ami was a wonderful mother, a dear sister, a devoted wife, a compassionate friend and an unforgettable grandmother and great grandmother. She passed on many traditions and lessons that we will forever carry in our hearts.
Katie was predeceased by her loving husband, Ivo; parents, Hilde and Georg Schuster, and younger brother Georg Schuster. She will be deeply missed by her sister, Jutta; three children, Kristine (Derek), Anette (Rick), Ingo (Dana); grandchildren, Tyler (Stephanie), Christopher (Maggie), Katrina (Patrick), Kurt (Carly), Courtney (Liam) and Nicholas (Alyssa), as well as seven great-grandchildren, Zachariah, Lincoln, Zara, Olivia, Savannah, Everett and Zoey.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date when circumstances allow.
